Answers to Q&A
Why did you want to become a model?
When I was a child, my mom was always very interested in fashion, even having her own clothing line at one point. Because she was always looking at fashion magazines and watching Fashion Television (if you know, you know!) by default I developed an interest in fashion as well. This eventually developed into me designing my own clothes as a child and exploring with my own style as a teenager. Once the opportunity came up to be a model, the natural curiosity towards the industry was already there. I was a bit uncertain at first, but am so glad with how modelling has consistently pulled me out of my comfort zone, pushed me to grow in so many unexpected ways, and exposed me to people and places I would've never otherwise encountered. The desire to be involved in art and creating was the initial pull, but this career has given me so much more than I'd ever expected.
What makes you special?
I have a great attention to detail which I find often benefits me on set! I try to be attuned to the people I'm working with so that every shoot feels like a true collaborative effort. I'm generally very curious about people and their creative ideas, which really helps in being able to understand what my role is, and then adding my own creative twist and vision in. The best shoot days are when we all come with curious and open-minds, and just have the desire to explore and create freely! When you're flexible, a natural flow builds and that's when the best work is made.
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about anything in which I get the opportunity to connect to the Earth, other humans, or myself in a meaningful way. This shows up in my life in a handful of ways: learning about plants and gardening, having a meditation and yoga practice, volunteering at my local community garden, doing group hikes with strangers, or even something as simple as listening deeply to whoever I'm talking to. I'm passionate about any opportunity to ground deeply into the moment. This translates well into modelling because it's a deep act of being present in all senses: with myself so that I have full awareness over my body and how I'm showing up, with the people I'm working with and being attuned to their creative vision and needs, and with the environment I'm in and being able to read the space.
When you are not modeling, what do you do on your day off??
This often changes, but right now I'm doing an herbalism course, committing myself more to yoga, and getting into running! In this industry you're often around a lot of people and different energies, so it's good for anyone in the space to have their own practices to ground into self. At the moment, these three are my main ones! I also am always looking for ways to get creative and spend a lot of my time writing, reading, taking photos, and lately have been playing with Super8 film. My goal is to dive more into the world of herbalism and deepen my studies, as well as eventually do a yoga and meditation teacher training.
If you could give an aspiring model any advice, what would it be?
While there may be an inclination to change who you are, even when sometimes being told to do so, the best thing is always just staying true to you and what feels right for you. Everything in the industry is so fickle and subjective, so if you let yourself be defined by the demands and desires of others, it'll be easy to get lost in all the voices and lose yourself. When you simply take care of yourself for your own sake, explore the things that feel good, leave what doesn't, and just give yourself space to play and be curious, the journey then becomes that much more enjoyable! Patience goes far in the industry, and it always helps to be gentle with yourself above all else.
