Answers to Q&A
Why did you want to become a model?
I have such vivid memories of watching America’s Next Top Model when I was in elementary school and dreamt of having the chance to do what they were doing. I never thought I would be able to model because of my body, and I remember thinking this as young as 6/7 years old. At that time, there wasn’t much body diversity in the industry so it seemed absurd that I would want to be a part of it. When I started pursuing modelling it was partly used as a creative outlet for myself, but mainly because I wanted to be the body representation for anyone who feels like they aren’t allowed to take up space, especially within the modelling industry.
What makes you special?
I think my ability to find a silver lining in any unfavourable situation is special. I’m a big “everything happens for a reason” person, and I think digging to find the good in the bad has been a very helpful coping mechanism for myself, and for people around me when we talk things through.
What are you passionate about?
This might be a cheesy answer, but I am so passionate about human connection. One of my favourite things about modelling is getting to meet so many incredible, talented creatives. I think it is so interesting how everyone crosses paths. I don’t know, I just think some people really are meant to fall into each others lives and the timing of it all is so fascinating. Taking the time to get to know a person is so special. It’s almost like you’re adding another little book to your internal library.
What’s a story your family/friends like to tell about you?
One story my dad loves to tell about me, is one from when I was just shy of two years old. My mom’s side of the family was over at our house to celebrate my grampy’s birthday and it came time to have cake and sing happy birthday. When people started singing, I apparently stood up on my chair and started yelling “I sing song!!!” and I wouldn’t let anyone else sing, it had to be just me. To this day, if I’m ever cranky or upset, my dad will look at me with an angry expression and say “I sing song” and it never fails to make both us laugh.
Who is your favourite model?
Tess Holliday, hands down. I have admired her for almost 10 years now. I still remember when she made headlines for getting signed as a plus size model. That was the first time I had ever felt seen, and the first time that I believed I could also achieve my dream of modelling. I think she’s just incredible. She has paved the way for so many models, and I know I’m not alone in looking up to her.
