Answers to Q&A
What inspired you to become a model?
Growing up, my favourite hobby was creating characters through makeup and clothing and creating mini Video Star and iMovie productions. When I discovered that modeling would allow me to do this as a career, I was ecstatic! I didn’t know how to go about becoming a model, and the thought of putting myself out there was daunting. One morning, I woke up and decided today was the day I would go for it. I researched agencies in Vancouver, asked my mom to take digitals of me, and submitted to the agency that I felt most aligned with. The rest is history!
What are you most excited about when it comes to modeling?
Modeling gives me the opportunity to work with incredible photographers and stylists, who are always thrilled to talk about their craft when I share how interested and passionate I am about media and fashion. Connecting with creative individuals and observing them in their flow state is so inspiring and has definitely been a highlight for me. I love that, as a model, I get to embody the creative vision of the artists I am working with, and be a part of bringing unique concepts to life. I also enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures. Working with creative individuals around the world combines all of my passions into one job.
Can you share with us some advice you have for models wanting to get into the industry?
I’ve noticed through my own experience and that of my friends who have wanted to get into modeling, that an inner dialogue of not feeling “ready” is quite common. Whether it is planning to apply once your skin clears up, once you grow your social media, or once your bad haircut grows out, there will always be another aspect of yourself to perfect before feeling ready to be judged on your appearance. “Feel the fear and do it anyway” is a quote that I live by that has helped push me to pursue my dreams to create the life I envision for myself.
I’d also suggest organizing photoshoots with friends to grow more comfortable in front of the camera. The confidence you exude when you’re comfortable posing translates through the lens and will make your first couple of professional photoshoots feel much more natural.
Share a fun fact about yourself!
I have been a competitive athlete all my life… until now! I was a competitive gymnast for ten years and am still obsessed with watching Simone Biles compete. I played competitive volleyball for seven years, and now coach beach volleyball to scratch my volleyball itch. I also love to be outdoors, and like a true British Columbian, I am most happy when I am swimming in the ocean, skiing in the mountains, or hiking through the forest.
Another fun fact is that I love hosting tea parties! My love for event planning started as a child – I would conceive elaborate birthday party themes and organize the party months in advance. My tea parties nowadays take much less time to plan but have become a favourite hobby of mine.
