Answers to Q&A

What inspired you to become a model?

I was inspired to pursue modeling when I started film school. I was already behind the camera in the creative space of filmmaking and photography, and I was inspired to explore the other side of things. I had a photographer friend from my film lab take my digitals, and I applied online. Having a background in dance, ballet particularly, and being passionate about artistic and collaborative spaces, modeling seemed like a natural fit. Going in, there were many unknowns as I knew very little about the industry, but I think that’s also what made it so exciting! I’ve also always been drawn to very Bowie-esque styles that are highly inventive and ‘out there’ (Beauty Papers magazine, for example) and I am fond of the idea of creative experimentation. I think modeling can serve as an amazing vehicle for pursuing these things!

What are you most excited about when it comes to modeling?

Travelling, without a doubt. A trip to Denmark last spring to visit family sparked my desire to travel, and with research, I came to learn that modeling can be an incredible way to open doors to new lands and new experiences.

Also, of course, there are extraordinary connections that are made along the way. I have only been at this for a short time, and I’ve already met some incredibly vibrant and multifaceted people who have inspired my own creativity. I can’t wait for what’s to come!

Can you share some advice you have for models wanting to get into the industry?

Though I am in the very early stages of my journey, I have already learned so much!

One of the best things I did while getting started was that I made sure to reach out directly to models in order to hear their first-hand experiences, and I would highly recommend any aspiring model in the early stages do the same. Instagram is a great resource in this area. Several models shared their candid experiences with me and highlighted the importance of finding an agency that is the right fit for you and that aligns with your goals. This research helped me a lot in terms of feeling confident in my choices. They also provided me with advice about getting started, trusting your gut, knowing your boundaries, being open-minded, prioritizing your well-being, etc. Meet up with models in person if you can! It’s all so valuable and can be very helpful while learning to navigate the world of modeling.

As well, be present and take on opportunities to network with those around you (on set, for instance). You never know what sort of connections and additional experiences will arise as a result.

Share a fun fact about yourself!

My grandmother was a professional ballerina, and I followed in her footsteps and began ballet when I was seven. I moved away to ballet school when I was nine, and this experience shaped many aspects of my life. Although I was at the school for only a couple years, I learned a lot about self-discipline and independence, performance and creative expression, and made lifelong friendships along the way (my then-roommate and I are still best friends). It was by no means an easy experience, but I am forever grateful for all that I gained from it.

I also love music. I think this is true for any dancer. And if I like a certain song, I will listen to it on repeat for a very long time. Currently, my favourite bands are Arcade Fire, OMD, Pet Shop Boys, Kraftwerk…the list goes on. On the more mellow side, I love Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Sarah Harmer and many others. My playlists are comically eclectic!
