Answers to Q&A
What inspired you to become a model?
I started modeling because I've always been really camera shy. I always wanted to try it but I never liked having my picture taken. So, I thought the best way for me to get over that fear was to jump into the deep end! I didn't want to wake up in 10 years regretting that I was too scared to try. I applied to my agency after they followed me on Instagram. It was a very new agency but I could tell that they knew how to represent diverse models. It felt like a really good fit for me!
What are you most excited about when it comes to modeling?
I'm really excited for more diverse representation in the industry (especially more Indigenous representation)! There are so many incredibly talented and creative people who normally would never get the chance to reach a wide audience. As the industry opens up, there's going to be so many exciting opportunities. I really can't wait to see more diverse faces being represented, it makes such a huge difference. I really feel like we are in a transition period and we need to embrace it.
Can you share with us some advice you have for models wanting to get into the industry?
I think the most important thing I've learned so far is how to be comfortable being myself. It is so important to be yourself in modeling. I was a shy, quiet, dorky kid and found it really hard to express myself or be myself. Through modeling I am learning to embrace who I am and where I come from. I think if you are going into modeling with a strong sense of self, you are in such a good place. Because then you can just have fun, experiment with your work and not worry about being self-conscious or taking a bad photo. Have fun, make friends and practice.
